Colorado Artists turn bicycles into Works of Art for USA Pro Cycling Championship

11 artists from Colorado were selected by Plus Gallery owner Ivar Zeile to take brand new Cannondale bicycles and turn them into works of art, each pairing with a country that will be racing next month in the state for the historic USA Pro Cycling Challenge.  Plus Gallery hosted an unveiling event for the bikes on Thursday, July 28th, the only opportunity for the Denver public to see the bikes before moving on to Denver International Airport where they will be prominently displayed atop the baggage claim terminals during the month of August.

Here are select images of the artists and/or their bikes, you have to guess which country each one represents.....otherwise you can find out onsite at DIA starting Monday August 1st.

EXCLUSIVE ARTWORK UNVEILING THIS THURSDAY, JULY 28th ONLY AT PLUS GALLERY

Plus Gallery invites you to join us on Thursday, July 28th from 5-7pm for an exclusive event that is unique in Colorado's History.  The USA Pro Cycling Challenge comes to Colorado for the first time ever, bringing international attention to the state for a bike-race of epic proportions.  In celebration, Visit Denver and DIA have teamed up with Plus Gallery for a curatorial endeavor that has local/regional contemporary artists turning Connondale roadbikes into works of art.  We think you will find the artist selection and the results to be fascinating and invite you to see the works in person and meet some of the artists before the bike's go off to DIA this weekend.  We'll be serving excellent wine and beers from around the world during the unveiling celebration, along with some light snacks.  But the real reason  to come is to join in the historic celebration that comes one day after the actual ten-year anniversary of Plus Gallery.......we are keeping our party hats on till the end of July and then taking a well needed break in late August.

Please RSVP to klams@visitdenver.com if you will be attending.

SOCIETE PERRIERE VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH JENNY MORGAN!

From the "Societe Perriere" website:  Up-and-coming Brooklyn, NY-based artist Jenny Morgan's work has been resonating in the art world for the past two years or so. The vulnerability conveyed in her portraits is captivating and honest, and Morgan carefully uses color to bring out her subjects' character on canvas. In addition to her recent exhibition, "Jenny Morgan: One and the Many," Morgan has secured several portraiture commissions from the New York Times Magazine and New York Magazine and was also featured on the cover of art ltd. Société Perrier met up with this amazing talent at Like the Spice Gallery in Williamsburg for an introduction to her work, inspiration and hopes for the future:

And here she is explaining one of her recent self portraits, found on the Society Perrier facebook page:

PLUS GALLERY, JULY 27, 2011: TEN YEARS OF EXHIBITING GREAT CONTEMPORARY ART, BUILDING ARTIST CAREERS, HAVING FUN AND KEEPING IT UNSTUFFY AND REAL, AND SOME TEN-YEAR TIDBITS

TEN YEAR TIDBITS:  SOME OF PLUS GALLERY'S BEST MOMENTS OF THE LAST TEN YEARS

FAVORITE E-NEWS MOMENT FROM LAST TEN YEARS AT PLUS
Avid readers of the Plus Gallery newsletter usually know that our favorite day of the year is April 1st.  Our first major april fools joke had a number of people from the community wondering if Damien Hirst was really going to be at the gallery on a Sunday, though many people just wrote in to correct our spelling of his name.  Two years later we pulled off a stunt that had us surprised at the community response, we've always said you need to write something really outlandish to know if anyone is reading:

Plus Gallery receives funding from Guggenheim foundation, NEA and NRA: The critical acclaim that Plus Gallery has received for our new space at 2501 Larimer has also generated significant interest from some of the standard bearers in the art world and beyond.  The illustrious Guggenheim Foundation has given Plus a generous grant for the support of the new facility and the long-term development of our local artists program, as it is the only one of its kind in the world to offer exclusive support to the creme-de-la creme of the Colorado contemporary scene.  The NEA has also recognized Plus Gallery's contribution to the arts and has dedicated 52.80% of its budget as a way to celebrate both Denver and the growing stature that the city is realizing world-wide, with Plus firmly at the helm of that advancement.  Finally, seeing that we are still in what might be considered a "rough and tumble" neighborhood, the NRA has also generously donated ammunition and weapons to keep the gallery and its artwork safe.

FAVORITE ARTIST TALK FROM LAST TEN YEARS

Plus Gallery is one of the few local galleries to consistently host informal gatherings in which our featured artists can discuss their works, over ten years we've built up a very nice and valuable collection of those moments.  Whether they might one-day find their way into a major documentary or forever be relegated to our archives (or Youtube) remains to be seen, but we failed to record our favorite artist talk from 2009, Bill Amundson's rapid-fire stand-up-worthy explanation of his "New Tower of Babel" from his introduction to the gallery in the group show "Brave New World."  We later asked Bill to abbreviate that talk, sans audience, feeling that his version of the Tower of Babel was easily one of his masterpieces to date.  You can check that out on our Youtube page or wait till Bill returns to Plus Gallery later this fall for his first solo exhibition in late October, which could end up as one of the great moments of the next ten years.

MOST FABULOUS DINNER PARTY FROM THE LAST TEN YEARS

Dinner parties at the gallery, while not common, have been more frequent than most might imagine, but they are generally reserved for clients or those with a  keen connection to the gallery or our artists.  Back in 2004 we hosted one of the most spectacular exhibitions in our history, Susan Meyer's "Malfunction Junction" which consisted of a scaled-down old-school wooden rollercoaster complete with flashing lights and accompanying soundtrack.  We saw the opportunity to host what we called the "Roller-coaster dinner extravaganza" with some old and new friends one night, centered within Meyer's installation, creating a most unusual and dazzling effect that is forever singed in our memories.  Our recollection was that the evening ended sometime around dawn, and guests included the architect of our future (now current) space as well as his wife, the current development director for the Denver Art Museum, and the person who revamped our website into something functional and lasting.

FAVORITE PRESS QUOTE FROM LAST TEN YEARS

Courtesy of Michael Paglia of the Westword, who used to pay attention to Plus prior to our move in 2009, and when it came to artist Bruce Price he rightly went over the top for his 2005 exhibition "Full."  Paglia closed his review "Paint the Town" with "Price has been one of the most talked-about abstract artists active in Colorado during the past ten years.  With the magnificent paintings in FULL, he can also be called one of the area's most important artists of any kind."  Strong words indeed, and Price continues to amaze us with his daring and original career.

FAVORITE ARTWORK SALE FROM LAST TEN YEARS

There have been many memorable moments relating to the sale of so many of Jenny Morgan's paintings, we could practically write a novel about them all (and maybe someday we will). But the best has to be the pivotal painting "Enid Ellen" which we had available for years at the gallery before a good client finally added it to their collection. Enid was first introduced at our intern-curated exhibition "Vis-a-visage" at Object+Thought, an offsite space we teamed up with for a couple of years that didn't seem to get the same notoriety as our on-site endeavors but certainly carried our strong curatorial stamp, leading directly to the addition of R. Justin Stewart and Douglas Walker to our permanent stable of artists.
"Enid Ellen" was the first painting that Jenny Morgan collaborated on with another young artist David Mramor whom Jenny met during her masters studies in NYC at SVA and continues to work with in renowned artist Marilyn Minter's studio. Morgan claims to this day that it changed the direction of her painting, one that now resonates so much with major art collectors.  It was a gutsy and unusual portrait of Mramor in his performance-artist cross-dresser persona and entirely unlike anything Morgan had painted to date, only you could still tell it was distinctly hers.  It turns out that it was a quintessential painting in her young career, something that many shied away from because of the visceral intensity and extreme juxtaposition of opposing painting genres.  The couple who eventually bought it have three young children and decided to hang it in their dining room in a home that's just a few blocks from Washington Park.  I asked what their neighbors might think when they walked in, to which they replied "our neighbors buy their art from the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, but we buy art for ourselves."  This was one of many works they had purchased from us over the last ten years and at a time at which Jenny's career was starting to truly show advanced signs.

10 REMARKABLE AND FAVORITE UNSOLD ARTWORKS OF THE LAST TEN YEARS (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)

By our count we've managed to sell over 800 original artworks in the last decade, which of course is how we've stayed in business for 10 years.  But some of the best works of the last decade remain unsold.  Here's a list of ten favorites and/or truly remarkable works that have yet to make their way into a worthy collection:

- Mike Whiting's "Wedge," 2010

- Douglas Walker's "A-601,"  2010

- William Betts' "Attack," 2009

- Karen McClanahan's "Wait (Embedded)," 2007

- Devon Moore's "Hoverplate," 2007

- Jean Arnold's "South Broadway: Alameda," 2007

- Gabriel Liston's "This is a far better thing," 2006

- Susan Meyer's "Shaft," 2010

- Wes Magyar's "Lineage I-IV," 2009

- Tseahai Johnson's "Exploding Carpet," 2008

........And just about anything by Colin Livingston, who we personally consider the Denver artist of the Decade.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLUS GALLERY MOMENT FROM THE LAST TEN YEARS?

Tell us and we'll post the best ones, if any, in our final newsletter of the summer next week!

PLUS GALLERY ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION......WOW!

Thanks to all who came  out and celebrated our ten year anniversary last friday night, as well as the opening of the new exhibition "Still on the wrong side of the water" with new paintings by Gabriel Liston and a fantastic new sculpture by Cordell Taylor.  There were many of you that we would have liked to thank or catch up with but it was just too overwhelming as the evening flew right by.  We value the communities support and enthusiasm for Plus Gallery and our artists, we hope to carry that forward into another decade in Denver.

If you would like to hear the speech from our anniversary celebration, a tribute to our interns, family, our artists, our clients, Gabriel, Cordell, etc..., visit the link on our youtube page.  The speech was documented by our intern Ryan Pattie and initiated by intern Amanda Shaune......Ryan filmed it sideways, so it's a bit strange to watch but hopefully the words are valuable and memorable, and ten years in the contemporary art business is strange anyway.

HAVE YOU SEEN SHANNON NOVAK'S INCREDIBLE GIFT TO PLUS GALLERY?

New Zealand artist Shannon Novak created the most unique gift for the Plus Gallery ten-year anniversary celebration, one you won't miss if you come visit the gallery as it graces the exterior awning on the east side.  We won't say any more, other than we are so honored to be part of this unique artists quickly developing body of work.  Novak just received approval for a similar though far more grand endeavor that involves New Zealand's famous Mt. Taranaki Clock Tower, which he'll cover with a similar graphic application covering all of the glass of the dome.  This massive and complex project will be complete, lit and unveiled in NZ on August 13th.

FRIDAY || JULY 22 || 7.30 PM ANDREW BLANTON + MARTIN BACK @ OBJECT + THOUGHT

perform as part of modulation(s) : a series of audio visual adaptations sponsored by object+thought.

andrew blanton will perform mar'aj for percussion with quadraphonic audio alongside the live max msp driven visuals of sonic memory : the nature of altered and over-written thoughts by other events.

martin back will perform from the series of works collectively named circulus, which have, at their focus, the use of audio signal recursion, or feedback, as the prima materia. this

particular permutation of circulus (faciat habere structuram) may be thought of as a series of (perhaps geological) abrasions which cause complex, feedback-activated, arcs of sonic

activity to manifest, mutate, and degenerate.

martin back + andrew blanton compose primarily for unusual instrumentation and fixed media which endeavor to define 'music' as a potential for the creation of novel situations for propagating, or investigating, sound worlds. both have created works for single and multi-channel video and live video performance using custom software, which have been exhibited in the states and internationally. andrew studied music performance at denver university while martin received his undergraduate degree from the moving image arts department at the college of santa fe where his mentors included gene youngblood and david stout. he has studied privately with composer and sound artist david dunn. andrew + martin are currently pursuing an mfa in new media at the university of north texas.

JOIN US FOR FIRST FRIDAY JULY 1st, EXTENDED HOURS TILL 8PM / CLOSED SATURDAY FOR 4TH HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Plus Gallery will be open with extended hours this Friday evening July 1st till 8pm, we welcome you to come visit and take in one of the most fascinating exhibitions of the year, Allie Pohl's  "Mirror, mirror."  There is much more than what first meets the eye in all of Pohl's work; she is driven by direct experience, rigorous sensibilities, and an understanding of the propulsive climate of our current times. Her Mirror panels are a direct reflection of commonalities inherent in online dating, a hot topic that received an elevated treatment in this week's New Yorker Magazine

Her pillar of chromed "Ideal Woman" forms that centers the exhibition is inspired by the Greek caryatid, at once dynamic as a sculptural presence, and yet, compelling as a contemporary progression of form that links the present mindset. The first 5 sections of the Caryatid were on view through the first three weeks of the exhibition, and as of today we've received the last two segments that take this monolithic form to the ceiling of the gallery.

The font used for the lettering in her text-based works is the artist's readjustment of "Accidents Grotesque," the precursor to "Helvetica," a popular modern font that was an attempt to make a more perfect font from its predecessor. The exhibition also introduces the artist's first use of neon, a material that continues to have strong associations to both the built environment and the high-realm of contemporary art. The combination is an unprecedented mix that confirms the artist's singular stature as an emerging artist of depth and vitality.

There is only one week left to see Allie's exquisitely conceived show at Plus Gallery, the show will conclude a week from Saturday, July 10th.  We still have an assortment of Pohl's "Ideal Woman" and "Mirror, mirror" necklaces available, don't miss the opportunity to pick up one of these collectors items now!

Plus Gallery will be closed this Saturday in observance of the 4th of July Holiday weekend.  Regular hours will commence once again next wednesday, July 6th.

PLUS GALLERY INTERN IDA CHORNEY ON ALLIE POHL EXHIBITION AT PLUS

Plus Gallery intern Ida Chorney is an art history major at DU, Allie Pohl's alma matter for her graduate studies.  We asked Ida to express some thoughts relating to Allie's work and current exhibition here at Plus:
Being a student and resident of Colorado for three years now, I have been familiarized with Allie Pohl's work, and ideal woman icon. However, it was not until spending the last few weeks with Pohl's newest exhibit, Mirror, Mirror at the Plus Gallery that the meaning behind her work really came to life. Not only does Mirror, Mirror offer beautiful aesthetics through the combination of reflection and light, but as is consistent with all of Pohl's work, it speaks to and questions vital contemporary societal values and ideals.

PLUS GALLERY ARTWORK MAKES FOR A GREAT WEDDING GIFT

Congratulations to soon to-be-wed couple Gina and Schuyler, they approached us last year in anticipation of their wedding with the desire to have a truly memorable gift as their wedding registry.  They selected the painting "The Descent" by Wes Magyar, which is a stunning rendition of Plus Gallery artist Bill Amundson, one of the most celebrated talents ever from Colorado.  The couple has been supported by a large number of family and friends in their quest to acquire the painting since then.  We applaud their initiative and wish them all the best as new young "art collectors" with something that will last a lifetime.
