FINAL WEEK FOR SUSAN MEYER EXHIBITION "PLATO'S RETREAT" - SELECT HOURS FOR THANKSGIVING WEEK

This is the final week to stop by Plus Gallery and view Susan Meyer's wonderful and ambitious mixed media exhibition "Plato's Retreat."  The gallery will be closed this Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday, but otherwise open for regular hours on Wednesday as well as Saturday, which will be the last day for the show.  Next week the centerpiece of the exhibition will travel to Miami and go on view at Aqua 12 Art Fair in association with ArtSlant as one of four international artists curated into their "Fringe Frontier" competition showcase.  For more information on ArtSlant visit their website at http://www.artslant.com
Plus Gallery was thrilled to have Dana Schutz visit the gallery and take in Meyer's exhibition a couple of weeks ago while she was in town for her Logan Lecture and exhibition opening at the Denver Art Museum.  Schutz is not only one of the most interesting painters in the world today, as anyone who has seen her spectacular exhibition at the DAM can attest, but she's also one of the most gracious and oddly wholesome artists we've ever had the opportunity to meet.

SUSAN MEYER'S "PLATO'S RETREAT" NOW ON VIEW AT PLUS GALLERY

Plus Gallery is now featuring Susan Meyer's newest exhibition "Plato's Retreat," which opened last Friday evening with a rousing artists reception.  Meyer's work is a virtual feast for a multitude of sensibilities, her connection to architecture shines through prominently with the recent work as does her penchant for adaptive technologies.  Two small video works showcase the mundane as it relates to her utopian concepts, and the painting "Her" ties it all together in the most sublime and curious way. Visit the gallery now through November 24th to see work by one of Denver's most respected and far-reaching artists.

PLUS GALLERY OPENS THE NEW EXHIBITION "PLATO'S RETREAT" BY SUSAN MEYER THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19TH, 7-10PM

Plus Gallery charges up the fall art season with the return of Susan Meyer and her fascinating new installation "Plato's Retreat," on view from October 19th through November 24th. Meyer is one of those rare artists whose focus is almost exclusively on large-scale environments steeped in both general and extremely specific historic reference points.  It has been eight years since her last solo exhibition at Plus Gallery, though she's been super active ever since with multiple showings in prestigious curated exhibitions such as the MCA Denver's
"Biennial Blowout" and "Decades of Influence," two presentations to the Miami's annual December art-fair marketplace, and a host of other significant exhibitions both locally and outside the state.  Plus Gallery most recently shared Meyer's works on our second floor exhibition space as well as 2010's cutting-edge group exhibition "Invincible Cohort."

Those who recall 2004's "Malfunction Junction" as fondly as we do know the extraordinary level of thought, time and detail that Meyer puts into an exhibition. "Plato's Retreat" follows suite, another singular effort that takes her conceptual emphasis of the last seven years on utopian ideals to new heights. Central to her new body of work in "Plato's Retreat" is a looming concrete warren of a structure, at once architectural model and dilapidated ruin suggesting a once sparkling futuristic architectonic utopia now sparsely inhabited, overbuilt, abandoned and overgrown - still functioning, though in a manner that seems to favor the individual over the collective.

"Plato's Retreat" finds Meyer back in full form in Plus Gallery's own "idealized" gallery space.  Please join us this Friday night from 7-10pm as we unveil one of the most stimulating and unusual environments one will find in a commercial gallery all year and celebrate one of Denver's most outstanding artists.

Please mark your calendars for our artist talk with Susan on Friday, November 2nd at 7pm, presented in conjunction with Denver Arts Week.

PLUS GALLERY HOSTS OPENING RECEPTION FOR SUSAN MEYER AND "PLATO'S RETREAT" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19TH 7-10PM

Her conceptual emphasis on utopian ideals has been building in complexity over time as she has experimented with the interface of technology and traditional sculpture materials, as well as a dash of new-media. "Plato's Retreat" finds Meyer back in rare form in Plus Gallery's own "idealized" gallery space, her first solo exhibition in Denver since 2004's equally ambitious "Malfunction Junction."

GREAT NEW WORKS AT PLUS GALLERY BY RETTIG, MEYER, SWEETROCKET AND LISTON

A number of new gems were brought into Plus Gallery this last week and will be on view for the opening reception this Friday, including an elegant new triptych by Hunt Rettig, a singular small-scale painting by Riva Sweetrocket, a new (and absolutely stunning) new sculpture by Susan Meyer in the vein of "Shaft" but more compact, as well as 7 new blue book tiles by Gabriel Liston that diverge slightly from his regular's in that the skin is stripped away from the figures (ie....they are skeletons), not to mention a handful of super-affordable woodcuts, monotypes on paper and for the first time ever, compact monotypes on board.

Stop by to see these gems, and the other great works currently on view by Plus Gallery artists.

SUSAN MEYER'S "SHAFT" OFF TO MIAMI FOR AQUA ART FAIR

One of the most outstanding works of art that we've had the opportunity to feature here at Plus Gallery this year is Susan Meyer's "Shaft" sculpture, an extraordinary wonder made of multi-colored plexiglas simulating a utopian environment that feels like a core-sample extruded from the earth.  We're not the only ones to register Meyer's extraordinary talent, she has recently been asked to send the sculpture to the Aqua Art Fair (coinciding with Art Basel Miami the first week of December) for display at the Art Slant booth.  Art Slant is an online publication for contemporary art with an expansive global reach, so it's no mean feat that they selected Meyer's work from thousands of submissions.

A new, smaller version of Meyer's latest work should be appearing soon at Plus Gallery, but we encourage anyone heading to Miami for the upcoming art-orgy to take in Susan's work and see it dazzle before an international audience.

"INVINCIBLE COHORT" OPENS THIS FRIDAY MAY 28TH AT PLUS GALLERY

Possibly one of the first truly collaborative exhibitions in the upper-level of Denver's contemporary art scene, "Invincible Cohort" brings together some of the most respected artists from Plus Gallery with equally renowned artists from around the city.  Not only is the exhibition a celebration of some of the most progressive minded talents in Denver, it's an extremely well-conceived installation that eschews the rigid standards normally found in a gallery context for something that lives and breathes in a unique and compelling way.

Susan Meyer and Jeff Starr have been given free-reign to produce the exhibition, as well as the opening festivities which will include DJ Master, Bill Amundson, and live music from Matt O'Neill and Justin Beard.  The installation is thoughtful and the atmosphere is sure to be fun. Invite your friends and neighbors and, come and enjoy.  Mixing the old and the new, "Invincible Cohort" includes works by Plus Gallery artists Bill Amundson, Susan Meyer and Bruce Price, Rule Gallery's Jeff Starr and Mary Ehrin, T/Judish Art's Matt O'Neill and well-loved free agents, Jason Appleton and Justin Beard. The exhibition is supported by a thoughtful essay from esteemed Singer Gallery director Simon Zalkind, and a small catalogue is underway to accompany the exhibition; it will be released during the RINO districts "Riennial" on June 19th.  The opening will take place on Friday, May 28th from 6-10pm, we do hope you will join us!
