Final Week for Kate Petley exhibition at Plus Gallery

This is the final week for Kate Petley's exhibition "One Big Dream" here at Plus Gallery.  Please join us in viewing Kate's singular works that Michael Paglia of the Westword called "extremely beautiful" and "rich in visual interest."  The gallery will continue with regular hours of noon to 5pm through this Saturday, October 16th.

JOIN US NEXT THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21st FOR OPENING RECEPTION OF MIKE WHITING'S "PRIMITIVES"

Plus Gallery will launch an exhibition of new sculptural works by the immensely popular Mike Whiting next Thursday, October 21st. Please join us that evening in welcoming Mike back to Denver for a reception from 6-8pm.  Whiting is scheduled to install his first major public works in Denver that week in the direct vicinity of the gallery, along with a major public work by RiNo District artist Mike Mancarella, creating further cause for celebration at the opening.

BRENDAN TANG WORKS NOW ON VIEW IN MONTREAL FOR SOBEY ART PRIZE

ALLIE POHL'S IDEAL WOMAN NECKLACES NOW AVAILABLE AT PLUS GALLERY

It would be hard to deny that Plus Gallery newcomer Allie Pohl is an exceptional and ambitious artist. Along with the cutting edge, mixed media installations she has mounted this year, Pohl has also found outlets for her popular and collectible line of necklaces that promote the ideal woman theme to the masses.  They are now being carried in select retail stores throughout the country, some of which are very prestigious, amping her level of exposure even more to a very discernable and supportive audience.  Plus Gallery now has a small selection of the necklaces available here and will continue to increase our inventory through the holidays as they make the "ideal" gift for someone on your list.

Here's one of our favorite testimonials from the "Ideal Woman" blog that fans of the necklace have been using since its inception:
"I went into Michael's Crafts to get some supplies and when I got to the register the nice woman asked about my necklace. She asked what the shape was, wondering if it was a cat. I told her that it was Barbies crotch, and she instantly turned blood red in the face and become agitated enough that she could not even work the cash register. After an uncomfortable moment of silence she told me that "this is not her generation", and I say, "but Barbie is 50 years old". After a few more uncomfortable moments of silence, she just shook her head and told me that it had just caught her off guard. She will never think of Barbie in the same way."

AMUNDSON LTD. EDITON SILKSCREENS FINALLY SELLING, JUST A FEW MORE LEFT

As Bill Amundson exited Denver after 35 years this last month, we felt it was a good opportunity to find interest in his limited edition hand-colored silkscreen prints that celebrate last year's billboard commission celebrating the Denver Performing Arts Center.  Well guess what, people have actually started to buy them!  We still have a few more left, they are well priced at $100 each and surely stand as a collectors item by one of the most talented artists to ever live in Colorado.

MIKE WHITING'S LATEST PUBLIC COMMISSION GOES UP IN WASHINGTON STATE

Plus Gallery artist Mike Whiting just completed installation of his latest major public artwork titled "Nosegrab," commissioned by the Snohomish County Arts Commission for Martha Lake Airfield Park in Lynnwood, Washington.  The installation comes just prior to Whiting's first commission for Denver set to be installed in the next couple of weeks right around the opening of his solo exhibition at Plus Gallery (if all goes well.....).

JENNY MORGAN TO BE FEATURED IN HER FIRST INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION!

92YTribeca partners with Like the Spice Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Artist-Led Initiatives Support Network, London (ALISN) to present Off the Clock. This special group exhibition co-curated by Like the Spice and ALISN is made up entirely of artist's assistants.

As far back as the Middle Ages, artists have rarely worked alone. The arrival of Minimalism's large-scale sculpture and the explosion of Andy Warhol (not to mention the unprecedented spike in art prices) have encouraged artists to consider using an extra set of hands (or many, in some cases). The benefits are mutual: up-and-coming artists learn important secrets of the trade, while their seasoned employers reap the many rewards of artistic assistance. The glory, however, often still goes to the artist whose name is on the work. Discussing the assistant opens up essential questions about the role of labor in art production and the importance of an artist's name and mystique.

Each of the artists featured have learned through doing, lending their talents to works that can be seen in major galleries, important private collections and public spaces throughout the world. This exhibition features works by Rachel Beach (Roxy Paine), Matt Blackler (Gordon Cheung), Jason Bryant (Kehinde Wiley), Ben Deakin (Keith Tyson), Allison Edge (Mcdermott and Mcgough), Rob van Erve (Judy Pfaff), Alison Gill (Gavin Turk), Charlie Ledbetter (Jeff Koons), Jenny Morgan (Marilyn Minter), Reuben Negron (Papo Colo), Lauren Page Russell (Spencer Tunick), and Lucas Blalock (Vik Muniz).

STARTZ DENVER FILM FESTIVAL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, EXCITING NEWS FOR FILM CENTER JUST ANNOUNCED

The Denver Film Society today announced plans to relocate its film center in early November to 2510 East Colfax, across the street from East High School and the former site of Neighborhood Flix. The new Denver FilmCenter/Colfax will join neighborhood specialty retailers including the Tattered Cover Book Store and Twist & Shout Records in creating a premier cultural arts and entertainment destination on East Colfax Avenue.

DFS has signed a lease agreement with an option to purchase the site from building owner Frank Schultz, President and Co-owner of Tavern Hospitality Group.  Says Schultz, "I was originally drawn to the location because of the tremendous potential for that area of Colfax.  Shortly before we were to begin construction on our approved plan, The Denver Film Society approached us with a request to lease the space from us.  We both share the same vision of bringing a cultural revitalization to the neighborhood.  I felt it was the right decision for DFS to use the space for the new Denver FilmCenter.  The Denver Film Society lease provides an immediate benefit for the community and I'm thrilled to make this happen for them and this neighborhood."

For the Denver Film Society, the property provides the best opportunities for future growth and stability.

"We're excited to take a step beyond just a location and truly find a home that is in the heart of an entertainment and cultural corridor," said Tom Botelho, executive director of the Denver Film Society.  "Frank Schultz demonstrated a willingness to listen to our proposal and shares a vision for what our new Denver FilmCenter home has to offer to the community."

The Denver FilmCenter/Colfax will feature three screens, leather stadium seating, state-of-the-art sound, as well as a full bar and restaurant with seating for 80 in the theater lobby.

"Our new home is in an incredibly vibrant neighborhood and is within walking distance of 50,000 potential customers," said David Charmatz, DFS board chair.  "We're looking forward to the opportunities this location will present in terms of educational and cultural programming with our neighbors, especially the students and staff at East High School."

The 33rd Starz Denver Film Festival will operate in two locations - at the Starz FilmCenter (Downtown Auraria Campus) and the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax.  Year-round DFS programming will begin at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax location on Nov. 15.  DFS will maintain its business office and host select special events at the Starz FilmCenter through November 2011 when its existing lease expires.  Educational programming and partnership with the University of Colorado at Denver College of Arts & Media will continue at both locations.

"Our new home is a perfect match for the kind of intimate programming that DFS does best," said Britta Erickson, Festival Director. "Through the combination of year-round film and Festival programming that annually draws international attention, we're confident that our members and film lovers throughout the region will experience one of the best social and cultural environments our city has to offer."
