"BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING" OPENS SEPTEMBER 21st AT DENVER FILM CENTER - ARTIST WAYNE WHITE IN ATTENDANCE FOR FRIDAY NIGHT'S OPENING

As with many of the Denver Film Center's visual arts-related programs, we were given the opportunity to preview the latest film on the Center's calendar related to our favorite topic.  "Beauty is Embarrassing" is the latest artist-as-subject documentary to hit national screens, and well deserving of that status. The movie is the story of artist Wayne White, someone whose name might not ring a bell for all, but whom almost everyone is likely to be oddly aware of for any number of his outstanding endeavors and accomplishments throughout his career.  We love how the film goes in-depth to plumb Wayne's existence in the arts, and how ultimately the portrait truly informs the psychology of what it means to be a successful artist.  But there is plenty to love about this film, not least that it's part of a healthy trend towards looking at living artists as meaningful subjects worthy of feature-length treatment.

Early on in the film, White defines his world and artistic stance with "I'll settle for laughter any day, laughter's a deep thing."  We couldn't agree more, much of today's best social commentary coming from sources that make light of their subject in the most relevant and revealing ways.  And it's a grounding force that absolutely helps many of us get through life.  In Wayne's case, it likely developed in reaction to his surroundings, being born and raised in the deep south in a typical county and family that quite naturally wouldn't understand much about "art."  Wayne knew from an early age though that art was his calling, and the film delivers an outstanding depiction of acceptance between not just Wayne's generation and his fathers, but more the specifics of his personal relationship with pops.  White's statement that "Art was something you bought at kmart," feeds greatly into the films development, as he goes from a country bumpkin to a creative force pursuing art as a lifestyle in what he initially considered a "dream job" as set-designer on Pee Wee's Playhouse, to the draining characteristics that such a lifestyle actually purports. It's not easy being put through the creative grind, though in the long-run it allows Wayne to eventually step outside of the realm of notoriety in the creative sector to that of being an actual visual artist who makes art for himself on k-mart style throw-away thrift-store paintings. His story delivers the roots, trunk and the limbs of what we consider the profession of "artist" to be across America, none of it being precisely understood by many and even personally what it's chalked up to be.

There are great, revealing moments throughout "Beauty is Embarrassing," with megastars like the Simpson's Matt Groening showing deep reverence for White's work, as well as Wayne's lovely and supportive wife who put her own creative talent and success on the side in full support of her husband's desire to live the American Dream through a life-long tendency towards saying "Fuck You."  In fact, White loves the use of slang, it becomes the core of the his text-based paintings that are occasionally familiar, such as the cover for the outstanding band Lambchop's "Nixon" album, and almost always uproarious.  Throughout the film White comes across as a humble, genuine and inspiring personality, even when he says things like "There's a lot of people in the art world with sticks up their butts, but if you meet somebody like that, all you gotta do is say is "I'll smash this painting over your fucking head."   In many ways he's not too far removed from our own beloved Bill Amundson, an artist who is still grappling with notions of artistic success through singular inherent talent and a lifelong pursuit that involves humor, and saying it exactly as you mean it.

"Beauty is Embarrassing" opens this Friday, September 21st at Denver FilmCenter/Colfax.  The artist Wayne White will be in Denver to regale the opening night audience, so don't miss out!  For more information, visit

Arvada CO - The nationally recognized Arvada Center will open its latest art gallery exhibition, FACES, PLACES & SPACES sponsored by Exempla Lutheran Medical Center with a public reception on Thursday, June 7 from 6-9 p.m. FACES, in the main gallery, goes beyond the traditional portrait show focusing only on the face, the quintessential expression of humanity. Through painting, photography and sculpture, PLACES, in the upper gallery, will highlight the juxtaposition of the interior, intimate and exterior, urban spaces created by humans. SPACES, in the theater gallery and in collaboration with Michele Mosko will feature large encaustic work by Earl Schofield and ethereal paintings by Lanny DeVuono, two artists who tackle open spaces. The Faces portion of the exhibition occurs in the Main Gallery at the Arvada Center, and includes works by five Plus Gallery artists including Bill Amundson, Wes Magyar, Jenny Morgan, Austin Parkhill and Xi Zhang, along with a number of other artists from the region.

BILL AMUNDSON: AN ARTIST AHEAD OF HIS TIME

The news regarding Chase Banks two Billion dollar + loss last week had one upside:  fond remembrance of last year's unbelievably amazing solo exhibition "Blurred Vision" featuring all new works by Bill Amundson.  Bill's not exactly shy when it comes to his views on life, and one might also say he shows a certain level of foresight in his works from time to time.  Such was the case with "Stump with the Head of Jamie Dimon (American Dickhead IV)."

We are patiently awaiting the completion of Amundson's latest masterpiece "The Job Creators"

Bill will have three of his most recent self portraits on view in the upcoming Arvada Center exhibition "Faces, Places and Spaces," opening June 7th (along with select works from Plus Gallery artists Wes Magyar, Jenny Morgan, Austin Parkhill and Xi Zhang).  Bill is also on the slate for the fall Logan Lecture series at the Denver Art Museum, which we can only assume will be the most rousing talk in the history of that program, and not to be missed.  Become a DAM Contemporary member now to be the first to get tickets and the skinny on the rest of the lecture series.

BILL AMUNDSON SIGHTING POSSIBLE THROUGH END OF WEEK IN DENVER

Bill Amundson arrived in town last night for his series of workshops and lectures at the Art Student's League, which start this evening with "How I Draw What I Draw" at 6pm.  Any opportunity to hear Bill speak about his work, or life in general, is worth taking and we hope that the demonstrations and master classes will be jam packed.  Those who are not able to attend might get lucky and run into Bill and his wife Anita elsewhere as they take in the fresh Colorado air the next few days.  Bill will be bringing his latest self portrait to Plus Gallery tomorrow for us to share, as fine a substitute for the real thing as we might ask for.

PLUS GALLERY LIMITED EDITION HOLIDAY T-SHIRTS FEATURING BILL AMUNDSON ARTWORK NOW AVAILABLE!

Long time followers of Plus Gallery can rely on one thing each year:  A classy design on a t-shirt featuring artwork by one of our artists.  Not quite true, we failed to deliver last year, but we are more than making up for it with a new t-shirt design this year with imagery and text culled from Bill Amundson's recent block-buster exhibition, specifically his scathing commentary on the art-world found in "Art Speak Remote."  This year's design is printed on high-quality American Apparel shirts which feel great against the skin.  We've also upped the ante with a three-color silk-screen, the first in gallery history!  The men's version is slightly different than the ladies, but all are available in three different sizes and limited to an edition of 36 of each.  Get yours now, we'll have them available starting tomorrow evening at Frank T. Martinez opening reception and Plus Gallery holiday soiree at a cost of $35 each.  Get yours while you can!

FINAL WEEK AT PLUS GALLERY FOR BILL AMUNDSON EXHIBITION "BLURRED VISION"

This is the final week to stop by Plus Gallery and view Bill Amundson's "Blurred Vision" in it's full glory. Bill will return to Denver in February of 2012 for some lectures and workshops at the Art Students League, otherwise he'll be back on the boards in Wisconsin producing more work for the foreseeable future.

We came across this report on Bill from the Wisconsin State Journal, published in January of 2011 shortly after his return to the state.  We found it worth sharing, particularly in consideration of the explosive nature, quality and scale of the works he completed for our exhibition since that time:

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/columnists/article_9cdc10e4-1865-11e0-8b6f-001cc4c002e0.html

Bill's limited edition print "Four Art Franchises: Moderno" will be available from Plus Gallery through the holiday season, and we'll also be using portions of his scathing "Art Speak Remote" for the new Plus Gallery holiday t-shirt, available starting December 8th at the opening for Frank T. Martinez new exhibition "Out / Line"

New Mens and Ladies shirts available at Plus Gallery soon!

LOOKING FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS? WANT TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY? CONSIDER SHOPPING PLUS GALLERY

One of the absolute misunderstandings within the community of contemporary art is that you can't find a good bargain or even something remarkably well priced at a gallery as established as Plus.  We have a number of excellent recommendations for this years holiday shopping, whether you are looking for someone special on your list or upping the ante on your own with an art investment that will leave you satiated for the rest of your life.  While we always highly recommend considering the Plus Gallery artwork inventory in depth at any time, here are just a few items we think you should take note of for holiday gift-giving and receiving:

Bill Amundson Limited Edition Print

The first of it's kind for both the artist and the gallery, a high-quality print from a master artists presented in conjunction with Bill's current exhibition "Blurred Vision" and supported by Modern in Denver magazine.  Available for $250 each in an edition of 58, numbered and signed by Bill.

New Plus Gallery T-Shirt

Artwork and text from Bill Amundson's  savage and scintillating "Art Speak Remote" will grace this years new Plus Gallery holiday shirt, available in very high-caliber t's silkscreened in three colors in select sizes for both men and the ladies.  This year's design was inspired not only by Bill's artwork but by the opening salvo at his amazing artist talk on November 4th.  Available for pre-order now at $30 or at $35 once they are finished and unveiled at Frank T. Martinez exhibition opening on December 8th.

Xi Zhang - Dream Dusts book

Plus Gallery's most recent in-house publication is a tribute to the remarkable career of Xi Zhang.  At just the age of 26 this artist has produced some of the most fascinating and finely-hones bodies of work by any artist we've encountered.  The book looks and feels good, combining a multitude of Zhang's best and most recent works together with select text on the artist including his fascinating 2011 thesis writing.  Available for $100. We might also recommend asking about some of Xi's smaller, most affordable works, just a few are left and available at the gallery.

Jenny Morgan - New Frontier

We have exactly 2 more fresh copies of our first Plus Gallery book "New Frontiers" by Jenny Morgan, at a cost of $120.  After these two are gone, they will only be available by special order or direct from blurb.com for $150. A definitive collectors item and essential for all fans of Morgan's work.

Gabriel Liston's "How to draw your family"

A new and exquisite gem arrived at our doorstep recently by one of our favorite painters Gabriel Liston.  His handbound "How to Draw Your Family" is a fun and inspired combination of the artist's loose, magisterial sketches and often misunderstood wit.  We think it's the perfect stocking stuffer and are expecting a small run of copies to be available soon for the holidays.  Cost will be based on how much we like you and/or how badly you want one.  We also suggest considering any and all of the fine paintings from Liston's recent exhibition "Still on the Wrong Side of the Water" presented last july to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Plus Gallery in Denver.  Did we also mention the fine and affordable "Blue Book" tiles by Liston?  Also perfect for stocking or boxed, wrapped and stuck under a tree or two.

Ideal Woman & Mirror, Mirror Necklaces by Allie Pohl

Absolutely the ideal holiday gift, Allie Pohl has taken her concept of the "Ideal Woman" and developed a multi-tiered strategy for world domination, both as an artist and an icon.  We expect big things from Allie in the near future following her stunning solo exhibition "Mirror, Mirror" earlier this year at Plus Gallery.  We have a small supply of her necklaces, both the Ideal Woman in various colors and formats, as well as the new "Mirror, Mirror" that only the most deserving females can wear.

Plus Gallery gift certificate

Can't decide if that special someone will like that radically innovative new William Betts painting?  Not sure if Bill Amundson's "Eric Cantormoretti" will bring a smile or a frown? Don't make your holiday burden more than it needs to be, consider a Plus Gallery gift certificate in whatever amount you deem worthy, available just like cash and without an expiration date.

Riva Sweetrocket paintings (if you are in Niwot)

A few of Riva Sweetrocket's most recent paintings are currently on view at the Manifest Art Gallery in Niwot, on loan from Plus Gallery for their inaugural exhibition.  Sweetrocket recently left Denver for NYC, a move that we have no doubt will increase her collector base and elevate the level of her career substantially.  As a result, everything left in her inventory is worth consideration now, those prices are unlikely to go anywhere but up from here.  Read a little about her show in last week's report from the Longmont Times:

MUNDSON'S "TEEN EXCAVATION" OFF TO THE DAM

Bill Amundson's excellent "Teen Excavation" was recently acquired by the Denver Art Museum, becoming the fourth or so major work of Amundson's in the Museum's collection.  Bill, meanwhile, is situating himself in Staughton, WI and getting ready to make some more quaint works of art suitable for public consumption.

DENVER ARTS WEEK LAUNCHES FRIDAY

Denver Arts Week is once again upon us, a week long-plus celebration of arts in our community.  Though a bit redundant for the visual arts community (as we say, every week is "Denver Arts Week" at the gallery), nevertheless it's nice to see the city celebrate one of its greatest assets and something that brings joy to us all in its many forms throughout the year.

The week always launches with "Super-first Friday" which is this Friday, November 5th when the galleries stay open past their normal bedtimes, including Plus Gallery which will be open till about 8pm or thereabouts depending on traffic.

Plus Gallery artist Bill Amundson has a presence up the street from us at the Mellow Mushroom during Denver Arts Week.  This new, sleek and sexy restaurant on the 16th street mall features a terrific giant mural by Amundson that any fan of his would appreciate, and we've contributed a selection of Bill's smaller gems for their patrons to engage with during DAW including Bill's previous commission for the Denver Theatre District in appreciation of the DPAC.  The Mellow Mushroom offers up a special pizza-pie for the event along with beer specials from Oskar Blues, do stop in for a visit if you are out and about down town this coming week.

Otherwise, Plus Gallery has a spectacular exhibition of new works by California artist Mike Whiting on view through the week and concluding on November 27th.  We guarantee any visit to Plus Gallery to be a worthwhile time if you want to find out about some of the best art being shown in Denver.

AMUNDSON LTD. EDITON SILKSCREENS FINALLY SELLING, JUST A FEW MORE LEFT

As Bill Amundson exited Denver after 35 years this last month, we felt it was a good opportunity to find interest in his limited edition hand-colored silkscreen prints that celebrate last year's billboard commission celebrating the Denver Performing Arts Center.  Well guess what, people have actually started to buy them!  We still have a few more left, they are well priced at $100 each and surely stand as a collectors item by one of the most talented artists to ever live in Colorado.

POST AMUNDSON FAREWELL WRAPUP AND SHOW EXTENSION DETAILS

The energy around Plus Gallery was at an all-time high, with the Friday night going away celebration for Bill Amundson bringing more people through our doors in a single night than probably any other event.  The tribute was well deserved, and various sources in the arts community mobilized to wish he and his wife Anita farewell.

First came Kyle MacMillan's Friday-night pick in the Denver Post, featuring the illustrious Amundson drawing "Joe Joe Pop."

Next came Susan Froyd's heartfelt Westword Blog that same day, offering images and links in the way only a blog can do these days, you can check it out by linking at

http://blogs.westword.com/showandtell/2010/09/bill_affair_bill_amundson_says_bye_bye_tonight_at_plus_gallery.php

Finally, this week saw the final word from Westword's Michael Paglia in the regular edition hitting the streets today.  Because of all the press out on Bill's departure and show upstairs at Plus, we've decided to extend the exhibition of his works through till this Saturday October 2nd.

Bill's legacy in Colorado has been enormous, thousands of people have seen at least two of his major works at the Denver Art Museum since the opening of the Hamilton Wing several years ago, and audiences outside of the state have also been introduced via group exhibitions at galleries and institutions, including the most recent array on display at the Kohler Art Center this summer.  Those who want to see Bill at his most enormous can visit the "Mellow Mushroom" for pizza and drinks any day of the week at their new location on the 16th street mall between Larimer and Lawrence.   And in digging through the archives of press Bill has received online, we came across this rare gem from 2003, relating to Bill's lesser-known days as a beer-can collector  (which explains a lot about his work and, shall we say, personality....)

http://www.westword.com/2003-12-04/restaurants/consumed/

We shall all miss Bill's presence in Denver dearly, but will be counting the days until he returns for another Plus Gallery exhibition down the road. The anticipation to see what the Wisconsin climate does to his output should be palpable indeed!  In the meantime, we urge you to come view his work here at the gallery and consider adding something from one of the most talented and interesting artists in the world to your collection (like this striking image of Joe Nacchio from Bill's current "American Dickheads" series.

We leave you with the following two links to Bill's speech from last week as he received the AFKEY award at the Denver Art Museum.  Their annual meeting will likely never be the same!

Special event alert: Farewell to Bill Amundson this week at Plus Gallery

Artist Bill Amundson has been a fixture in the Denver community for 35 years, having slowly built a profile as one of the most skilled, prolific and downright compelling artists in the history of the state.  So it is with great sadness that we announce his departure from Denver and return to his homestate of Wisconsin, along with his wife Anita who mutually shared the love and admiration that has been continually attached to Bill throughout his lengthy career.

Bill's departure does not mean that he won't remain a strong presence within the Plus Gallery stable nor Denver's greater art environment, but those who know Bill and his extremely large and generous personality will certainly miss having him around.

SO, all week we celebrate the artist and his gifts to our community.  On Tuesday evening the DAM Contemporaries, of which Bill has supported and been a board member for 14 years, will honor him with this year's AFKEY award at their annual meeting at Palates restaurant at the DAM. Starting the next day, Wednesday the 22nd and going through to Saturday the 25th Plus Gallery will display an assortment of Bill's most treasured and wondrous drawings in our adjunct galleries on the first and second floor.

Though widely collected and known for the numerous small-scale drawings that reflect on our society and the peoples/forces that populate it (for better or worse), it is Bill's larger-scale drawings that show the depth and maturity he has built through an intense focus and love for drawing.  His talent is a true gift with enormous depth that has been shared in many ways through his time here.Plus Gallery will now offer up a grand selection of his best and rarely-viewed works, both older, recent and in some cases brand new in a first-of-its kind display.  In a nutshell, this is a rare opportunity and one that we invite everyone to participate in.
Because we and so many others have such fond memories of Bill and his wife Anita, we will also be hosting a farewell event here at Plus on Friday, September 24th from 5-8pm.  Leaving town is not easy, particularly fielding all the requests to visit and spend time with them both, so we see this as an opportunity for everyone to share in one final moment and perhaps even support their next step with the purchase of some of Bill's artwork.

We hope to see you this week.  Anyone wishing a private viewing of the works outside of gallery hours may contact ivar@plusgallery.com to schedule.

NINE ITEMS WE URGE YOU TO CONSIDER DOING THROUGH THE REST OF THE SUMMER IN DENVER

1.  Visit Plus Gallery to engage with "You Are Here," one of the most brilliant visual art exhibitions of the year and likely your only chance to view 5 of Canada's brightest talents in one room, at least outside of Canada.

2. Take the opportunity to introduce someone that likes contemporary art to Plus Gallery. We promise it doesn't hurt and that there's fair to good probability they will enjoy the experience. Appointments not only welcome but encouraged!
3. See Bill Amundson's amazing new commission for the Mellow Mushroom restaurant on 16th Street Mall.  Bill executed a 13 and a half foot original drawing that was then blown up to over 40 feet, and colorized by a professional in Atlanta with directions from Bill.  It's mind-blowing and likely the only major commission by a notable artist in a private restaurant in Denver, most certainly on the sixteenth street mall.  The food's pretty good too, and any place with Chimay on tap gets our seal of approval.

4. Participate in the Biennial of the Americas throughout Denver.  Whether a roundtable discussion or other speaking engagement, a music concert at the McNichols building, or any number of high-caliber visual art exhibitions at places like Redline, PlatteForum, the MCA Denver, or the spaces adjacent to the MCA that are only up for the month, you won't be sorry.  Lets face it, its no easy task to pull off an event of this scope and stature, and the only thing that makes it successful (besides the hard-work of the individuals involved) is participation from the public.  The mountains will always be next door, why not do something different and engage with a world-class event right here in our own back yard? To get the full rundown of events, visit http://www.biennialoftheamericas.org

5. Speaking of Denver's back yard, take in a night at Red-rocks for the amazing annual series "Film on the Rocks."  There are still a few nights left to witness the big screen presentation in one of the world's most amazing settings.  Considering the weak slate of concerts at Red Rocks this summer, here's a real chance to enjoy the venue on a modest budget.

6. If you are musically inclined, we recommend catching Crystal Castles at the Ogden Theater on August 9th.  Though not officially part of Plus Galleries "Canadian celebration" (though we did ask), this Canadian band should provide one of the most blistering audio events of the season, with Hot Chip and Sinden also on the bill.

7. Visit the Botanic Gardens for the Henry Moore sculpture exhibition.   The only appropriate term for this prestigious exhibition is "Wow!"  Anyone who questions Denver's ability to pull off a major cultural coup needs to get over and see this remarkable group of mammoth works placed in one of the most impressive settings anywhere.

A sample of Moore at the DBG

8. Ride a b-cycle around Denver, it's the best thing to happen to the city and a great way to save both time and energy while building a little leg-muscle.  Sorry if you live in the suburbs, but even those who work or frequent the downtown area will find the new cycle program to be fun and effective for those quick trips during busy parking hours.  And why not just take one out for a tour of the city's fabulous public art collection one day?

9.  Come celebrate Plus Gallery's nine-year anniversary on July 24th.   We never really considered holding a 9-year party, but when we found out that artist Jenny Morgan would be visiting Denver towards the end of the month, along with Tim Pourbaix, we decided it would be a good chance to throw down and celebrate the fact that we are still somehow in business.  The evening will just be a nice, casual celebration featuring a new painting by Morgan, a musical performance by Tim, and whatever shenanigans ensue from there.  The only catch is that you must RSVP to us by July 21st!

Jenny Morgan comes to Denver July 24th
