PLUS GALLERY - A LOOK BACK AT 2012 ...AND AHEAD TO 2013

The year 2012 has been a an exceptional one for Plus Gallery and our artists, one of solid exhibitions within the gallery throughout the year as well as a number of notable offsite exhibitions at the hands of other curators. We have always felt that what has most distinguished Plus Gallery over the years and continues to build with greater depth over time is the high quality of our artist's work and the wide degree of resonance they impact on the contemporary scene, both here in Colorado and now starting to move well beyond. We conclude 2012 with a recap of some of the most significant moments by our artists that we feel set their careers and our program apart from others in 2012:

1. Plus Gallery artist William Betts made several advances that distinguish him as one of the leading painters in the world today. At the beginning of 2012, just before his solo exhibition at Plus Gallery, he was awarded the annual National Juried prize from New American Paintings, a singular award amongst contemporary painters in the US. He followed that with his first overseas group exhibition "Tracing the Grid" at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart amongst some of the worlds most prestigious and historic artists, an honor greatly amplified by the fact that his career was still less than 10-years strong. On top of that, his name kept cropping up in the art-related news as collectors swept up his works at select fairs throughout the year. We applaud Betts for his achievements this year and maintain that his paintings are some of the most unique works of art in the world.

2. We can think of no painter originating from Denver that has made deeper, more remarkable inroads towards a prestigious career than Jenny Morgan. 2012 proved to be a pivotal one for this young artist, putting forth the single most successful exhibition in Plus Gallery history and receiving representation with a major Chelsea-based dealer shortly thereafter. Morgan's paintings were included in no less than three local curated exhibitions in 2012 including the CVA's outstanding "Out-Figured," curator Jennifer Garner's swansong with the institution and one in which Morgan was represented by works made up entirely from private local collections. Plus Gallery released a second gorgeous and collectible hard-cover book that documents her output from 2010 though the summer of 2012, and we continue to support and follow her career as she moves into her second decade exhibiting. We expect great things from her and eagerly await her solo debut with Driscoll Babcock galleries, set for October of 2013.

3. If there is one thing we have learned from the contemporary art business in the last 12 years, it's how limited the local market is for truly distinct, progressive sculptural work. Fortunately Mike Whiting has broken multiple boundaries in that regard, whether market driven or otherwise. Whiting was involved in several curatorial efforts this year including the exceedingly clever four-person show "Suburbia" at GOCA in Colorado Springs, as well as two solid NYC based group shows. But it was his first outdoor solo exhibition "8-Bit Modern" at the BYU Museum of Art that truly shows how well Mike's career has blossomed since emerging with Plus Gallery back in 2004. His monumental sculptures are simply spectacular grouped together in an outdoor setting, and with his commissions in the public realm continuing to build across the country, we are confident that we'll be seeing even more prestigious exhibitions from Mike in the years to come.

4. There are certain accolades artists manage to achieve that the art-following public might be firmly aware of, and then others that remain subdued but are of far greater importance. Xi Zhang has been no stranger to the former, having previously received recognition in 2011 as a "Pathmaker" in the visual arts on top of being acknowledged by the Denver Post as one of the leading artists under 35 years of age (and in Zhang's case, still under 30). But none of that compares, though it certainly helped him in achieving, one of his greatest awards of 2012: his U.S. citizenship through merits as an "artist of extraordinary ability." Only a few individuals know the efforts that were undertaken for Xi to receive his citizenship, not to mention the tight-timing that he was up against. We could not be more thankful that his application was approved this year, allowing him to stay in the US and continue to grace our region (for now) with his unprecedented talent. A few of Denver's print-based publications profiled Xi this year, including 303 and 5280, and his March solo exhibition "11 Ceremonies" was one of the year's standouts here at Plus. His recent acceptance by Platform 5280 Biennial of the Americas as an ambassador for Denver as well as the US for a month-long residency in Buenos Aires truly pushed the year over the top for Zhang. He continues to work at an amazing level in his Denver based studio on no less than three distinct, and wonderful, bodies of work.

5. Allie Pohl may not have been on the front-lines in Denver this year, but her reputation across the country continued to build in unprecedented and impressive fashion. Pohl's "Defaced" project stormed both the internet as well as her NYC debut via ArtCart. Her magnificent "Fuscia-chrome" caryatid went from her studio in LA to prominent outdoor setting in Winter Park Florida as part of that city's "Art on the Green" juried sculpture exhibition, certainly one of the most provocative forms ever exhibited publicly. On top of that Pohl exhibited in multiple LA based galleries, including the bathroom of the BaƱo Gallery where she unveiled newest, uber-sexy photographs in "Hot Seat," a series of self portraits that take place in select bathrooms of distinguished art destinations and beyond. Pohl is a fascinating and completely transcendent artist, one who continues to amaze us with her singular ideas and boundless energy and one whom we expect great things for in the future.

6. 2012 proved to be a notable year in more ways than one for Colorado's most stalwart and revered contemporary painter Dave Yust. After more than 40 years teaching on the frontlines of the Art Department at CSU in Fort Collins, Dave finally retired this past spring, a life-changing move if ever there was one. With more time than ever to focus on his artistic legacy and continued studio practice, Yust then thrust his efforts towards a retrospective that opened recently at the Loveland Museum Gallery, one that spans over four decades of his exceptional devotion to and work in printmaking. Dave has also devoted a great deal of his recent time on new paintings in his studio for his upcoming solo exhibition here at Plus, his first since 2006 and undoubtedly one of the most anticipated of the coming year.

7. If there was one event that has been the most memorable in Plus Gallery history, it was Bill Amundson's over the-top artist talk delivered in 2011 to a tightly packed house in full view of his first solo exhibition with us "Blurred Vision." It's no wonder the Denver Art Museum invited him this year to be one of the guest speakers as part of the fall Logan Lecture series, following on the heels of notable artists like Dana Schutz, Larry Bell and El Anatsui. Bill's lecture was another thrill, providing perhaps the most depth yet into his career in one sitting, as well as plenty of laughs and deeper thoughts to ponder that his work certainly inspires. Bill had a couple of small-scale exhibitions this year outside of Colorado, with several works from private collections also on view in the Arvada Center's summer show "Faces, Places and Spaces." But his best drawings of the year were reserved for Plus Gallery in a small showcase that is currently on view in our second-floor exhibition space, coinciding with his Logan Lecture. Though this years election provided good fodder for Bill to wrap his brain and pencil around, it's his upcoming 60th birthday that resonates heavily over the newest works.

8. Oh Canada, how is it that you are graced with a traveling exhibition of Douglas Walker's large-scale paintings that has spanned into two years now in multiple cities and venues.........and we are not? If ever there was an exhibition making the rounds right now in any location on this earth that we'd love to see in the United States, it's Walker's "Other Worlds" which began it's trek across Canada in 2011 at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, made its way in early 2012 to the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, proceeded slightly West to the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery in Toronto during the summer, and is currently on view through March 31st at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Plus Gallery unveiled the first of Walker's breathtaking, large-scale paintings during our 2010 Biennial of the Americas related exhibition "You Are Here," ones that simulate unearthed ceramics as if created on another planet, albeit one related to ours. Walker's works have advanced in both scale and dynamic content since then, highly deserving of the touring show that has occurred in multiple locations up North this year.

9. Plus Gallery related art-collections also made a tremendous impact this year, supporting exhibitions at the Arvada Center, the Center for Visual Arts, the Victoria Myhren H. Gallery at DU, as well as collection tours through the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. We expect to see more along these lines as our artists engage the public on a wider level and our patrons experience the joy of sharing their passion for art.

10. A number of additional Plus Gallery artists hit notes of achievement this year, including Austin Parkhill who is featured in the current issue of New American Paintings as well as on the walls at our gallery in his stunning solo exhibition "At Your Best." We are proud of our entire family of artists and the spirit that drives them towards excellence in their work and careers, whether that is acknowledged on a broader level or not.

PLUS GALLERY - A LOOK FORWARD TO 2013

We don't expect to replicate the achievements of this last year on all fronts in 2013, but do know that we'll have an entirely new set to celebrate twelve months from now. Here is a brief, advance view of what 2013 already has in store with our artists, including two highly anticipated Denver Museum exhibitions:

1. Patti Hallock is set to become the first Plus Gallery artist to be featured with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver this next year, with recent as well as new selections from her expansive "The West Is Here" series going on view this January. The exhibition is a good fit for the museum, Hallock having been included in group exhibitions at the MCA in their previous location both in the "Biennial Blowout!" of 2006 as well as the "Extended Remix" major survey of Colorado contemporary art that same year. There is still time to acquire works that will be on view in the exhibition, a level of patronage and support that we highly recommend for one of the state's most thoughtful and renowned young photographers.

2. Bruce Price is set to become the first Plus Gallery artist since Dave Yust (yes, pre-Plus Gallery, way back in 1976) to be given a solo exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. Recognized as one of the foremost abstract painters in the region, Price has integrated fabric directly into his paintings and works on paper for the last few years. Curators at the DAM recognized this unique quality perviously this year at a DAMC sponsored studio visit, and later asked Bruce to show a selection of his works on paper as part of their upcoming Museum-wide exhibition "Spun: Adventures in Textiles" in 2013. The exhibition commences in mid-April and will include a selection of more than 30 drawings from Price in the Hamilton Wing's Works-on-paper gallery. We also highly recommend supporting Bruce through acquisition of his work through this extremely rare opportunity.

3. Finally, Melissa Furness will have one of her most recent paintings, and Colin Livingston will give a preview of his latest body of work at the Arvada Center juried exhibition "Art of the State" in January. Livingston will follow up that exhibition with his next show at Plus Gallery later in April. Also on tap for 2013 at Plus Gallery are solo exhibitions from Dave Yust, Tsehai Johnson, Donald Fodness and Allie Pohl, with a few more slots waiting for final confirmation. We expect it to be another exciting year at the gallery and an opportunity to explore further in depth some of our most celebrated artists, as well as a taste of some of our newest family members. And stay tuned to our newsletter for more exciting developments with our curatorial efforts for the Denver Theatre District and their LED platform for exhibiting motion-based arts. We are looking to develop a full program of "Friday Flash" showcases to commence in late spring, and also set to initiate a permanent collection of works commissioned by local and national artists.

Please note that this is our final newsletter of the year. Plus Gallery will be open for regular hours through Friday, December 21st. The gallery will close for a short holiday break between the 22nd and 26th, but will be open for regular hours again starting the 27th and into the new year.

XI ZHANG OFF TO BUENOS AIRES NEXT WEEK FOR MONTH OF NOVEMBER FOR URRA RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Plus Gallery artist Xi Zhang is off to Buenos Aires next week for the month long artists residency program URRA.  Zhang's journey to Argentina is one of the first programs supported by Platform 5280 Denver Biennial of the Americas, a major honor as Xi gets to represent Denver's thriving artistic community abroad and interact with over 13 artists from around the world.  Zhang is also the only US based artist to be selected for the URRA program this year, so he will also be representing the country that recently approved his citizenship. Not a story that one would think of writing, but one that Zhang deserves for his artistic talent, not to mention his supremely cheerful nature.   We'll post some images of Xi in Argentina over the next month, and for now will leave you with three of the most recent works to come out of his studio before his excursion.
Xi worked with Artlab students on holiday ornaments earlier this week at Denver's PlatteForum  as part of the Platform 5280 residency selection program.  Here's a photo of Xi working with the students

PLUS GALLERY ARTIST XI ZHANG SELECTED TO REPRESENT DENVER AND PLATFORM 5280 IN BUENOS AIRES THIS NOVEMBER FOR INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Plus Gallery is thrilled to announce that Xi Zhang has been selected by the committee for Platform 5280, Denver's Biennial of the Americas, to be the official Denver participant and representative URRA, an Argentine artist residency program that encourages artistic production, favours dialogues, and promotes international networking. URRA will hold the third edition of its Artist Residency Program in Buenos Aires November 1-30, 2012, bringing together a group of 15 international visual artists for a month-long program where they will work closely with their peers, interact with the community, develop projects, and present their works.

We are so proud to have Xi selected, his selection reflects not only on the high-level of engagement and success he's had within the Denver art community to date, but also sheds positive light on Plus Gallery as a vehicle for helping to build meaningful careers for Denver-based artists.  According to the selection committee,  "This project is an important step in achieving Platform 5280's goal to help Denver artists reach both local and global audiences."
Platform 5280 will host a public Contemporary Arts Platform Presentation at 6:00 pm on September 28, 2012 at MCA Denver. Their contemporary arts team, international guest curators, and Biennial leader Abaseh Mirvali will present an in-depth look at the projects in the 2013 Biennial that will be activating Denver's public spaces.  Certainly an event that we encourage everyone in the community to get behind.

XI ZHANG FEATURED IN 5280 PROFILE "OUTSIDE THE LINES" IN LATEST ISSUE

Xi Zhang has drawn an unusual amount of attention to his work and career since moving from his hometown of Kaifeng, China to study at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver in 2004. We know exactly why, Zhang is one of the most natural, gifted and forward thinking artists of his generation, not just in Denver but in the Unites States.  Zhang is now officially a citizen of the US, as of this summer he received his permanent status from the US Government as an ?Artist of Extraordinary Ability.?  And so it is fitting that 5280 pays tribute to Zhang as one of the forces within Denver burgeoning art scene, as witnessed by their latest art-feature ?Outside the Lines,? available on newsstands and select locations throughout the area now.  Xi's abilities are awe inspiring, both to us as well as to many of his fellow artists in the area, as well as collectors.  Plus Gallery will be circulating selections of his most recent works throughout the new fall season, stop by to find out why he has been the most prolific emerging artist of his generation.

11 CEREMONIES - NEW PAINTINGS BY XI ZHANG NOW ON VIEW AT PLUS GALLERY

Xi Zhang opening reception (photo by Ryan Pattie)

Thanks to all who came out last Thursday evening to celebrate the opening of Xi Zhang's phenomenal new body of work "11 Ceremonies."  The exhibition has generated immediate high-praise from patrons and visitors to the gallery alike since launching last week, the work dense with vibrant imagery and Xi's explosive painting techniques. "11 Ceremonies" makes a major statement, one that is fascinating to interpret on one's own, but we feel that the artist's own personal reflections enhances the understanding of each individual work, which is why we highly recommend coming to join us on Wednesday, March 28th for Xi's informal discussion about the show.  Mark your calendars, the talk will start at 6:30pm.

Xi Zhang - Scroll Paintings

The paintings comprising "11 Ceremonies" are on view in the main exhibition space at Plus Gallery, but that's not all that's new from Xi for the show.  Six of his recent "Scroll" paintings are mounted upstairs, and represent both a historic and humorous side to the artist and his work, also receiving high praise from the viewing audience so far.

OPENING NEXT THURSDAY, MARCH 8th - XI ZHANG "11 CEREMONIES"

UPCOMING DAMC STUDIO TOURS INCLUDE PLUS GALLERY ARTISTS XI ZHANG AND BRUCE PRICE

The DAM Contemporaries launch the first of this year's artist studio visits on Saturday, March 10th.  Plus Gallery artists Xi Zhang and Bruce Price are both on the itinerary, each has moved into a new studio in the past year and both are highly relevant to the local contemporary scene today.  You must be a member of the DAMC to join, the schedule is as follows:

Saturday March 10, 2012
2:00 - 4:15pm    $10
Limited to 20 DAMC members

2:00 -3:00 pm
Xi Zhang's Studio (Santa Fe Art District)

Influenced by pop culture and social media platforms, Xi Zhang mines material for his art from what he refers to as "twenty-first century DNA" -- Facebook, video games, advertisements and Google searches. Zhang's use of the fantastic -- that slipstream realm between the real and unreal -- challenges our judgments of technology and media.

3:15 - 4:15pm
Bruce Price's Studio (RiNo Art District)

Utilizing a painterly approach, Bruce Price employs a series of patterns, colors and textures to create an extraordinary sense of depth, dimension, and visual rhythm in his work. He has become one of Denver's most lauded contemporary painters by delving into the nuances that have long typified the ornamental genre.

WESTWORD INTERVIEW WITH NANCY HIGHTOWER POSTED ONLINE THIS WEEK IN REFERENCE TO APOCALYPSE? HOW!

We are extremely pleased to see Westword's blog on our current exhibition "Apocalypse? HOW!" this week, and in particular the emphasis on writer Nancy Hightower who created the text that proceeded the exhibition (as serialized in our newsletter and on facebook) and accompanies the exhibition.  Hightower is quickly gaining notoriety for her creative and journalistic writing, particularly as it relates to contemporary art.  Hightower wrote the introduction to our recent book "Xi Zhang: Dream Dusts" (which will also accompany his upcoming solo exhibition next month) and is currently working on a piece on Jenny Morgan for her upcoming solo show at Plus in May.   Read more about Nancy and her take on the Apocalypse online at
And don't forget to drop by the gallery to see the works in our current show, there is some extremely well crafted works on view from Denver artists Drew Englander and Donald Fodness, and much more than meets the eye online with Albuquerque's Larry Bob Phillips and Chicago's Paul Nudd.

SAVE THE DATE: XI ZHANG SOLO EXHIBITION AT PLUS GALLERY OPENS MARCH 8TH

"11 Ceremonies" is the first season of Xi Zhang's painting series "The Switches," the artist's reaction to new social network forms and contemporary technologies.  The paintings document our continually shifting online living experiences and identities, interpreted by Zhang through a stunning array of color and fluid form.  Xi Zhang is one of the most distinguished emerging artists in Colorado history.   In 2011 he received his MFA in painting from CU Boulder, concurrently being named a "Pathfinder" in the visual arts and one of the top artists under 35 by the Denver Post.  Later that year he became the youngest artist to deliver a logan lecture at the Denver Art Museum as part of the fall series' focus on Chinese contemporary art.  His new works are socially charged, symbolically complex and as visually rich as anything being done in contemporary art in the world today.

ILLITERATE BLOG NAMES BILL AMUNDSON AND XI ZHANG TWO "BEST-OF" 2011's IN THE ARTS

2011: PLUS GALLERY YEAR IN REVIEW

2011 was undoubtedly a tremendous year for Plus Gallery artists and our internal endeavors to positively shape the face of Denver's contemporary landscape.  We'd like to share a quick recap of some of those moments, ones that many might not be aware of and those that anyone following our weekly news and program would already have discovered.  But we'll start with the largely unknown:
In 2010 we started posting what works have sold through the year on our Facebook page, we feel that it's a positive way to share information about our program and develop a certain sense of transparency.  We don't always update it readily throughout the year, but we've recently posted the majority of our second half of the year sales:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.175243182512019.31084.113473022022369&type=3

Our facebook page doesn't necessarily supplant our weekly newsletter, but we are developing it as a source for exciting reports, photographs and other opportunities that our patrons might enjoy, please join us there or recommend to anyone you know who is using facebook.
One of the most pleasing reports of the year that we would like to share are the exhibitions that have officially achieved "Sold Out" status in 2011. Those that hit the mark this year are:

- Xi Zhang's "Dream Dusts" (2010/2011)

 - Ali Pohl's "Mirror, Mirror" (2011)

 - Bruce Price "Full" (2005)

And there are three that are very close, with only single works left from each:

- Frank T. Martinez' "Complex Conformity" (2006)

- Robin Schaefer's "Mimesis" (2008)

- Jenny Morgan "This too Shall Pass" (2009)

In 2011, Tsehai Johnson was included with a major installation in the Denver Art Museum's exceptional and unprecedented exhibition "Overthrown: Clay Without Limits,"  and Xi Zhang became the youngest artist ever to deliver a Logan Lecture this fall, two very rare honors that we hold in highest regard.  Many of our artists have been featured in Museum exhibitions in the past but few as prestigious as the DAM.  We don't expect this to be a rare occurrence in the future as our artists across the board are gaining ground in their careers and reputations, not just in the region but throughout the world.  In 2012 we'll see our first International Museum presence with William Betts' inclusion in the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart's group exhibition "Tracing the Grid." Jenny Morgan will have an exquisite display of recent and some of her best works from solid local collections on view at Denver's Center for Visual Arts in early 2012 in the group exhibition "Out-Figured" which will include local as well as internationally renowned artists.  Mike Whiting returns with new works in February for an exhibition at Colorado Spring's Gallery of Contemporary Art alongside local luminaries Phil Bender and Chris Coleman.  And later in the Spring he'll be featured at BYU's prestigious Museum of Art in Utah with a solo exhibition that will include major outdoor works.  Finally, in the fall of 2012 Dave Yust will be given some due for one of the longest and most prolific careers in contemporary art by a Colorado Artist when the Loveland Museum hosts "Dave Yust: 40 Plus years of Printmaking."

Our own schedule for 2012 holds great anticipation and excitement for us, we'll be celebrating the end of times in January 2012 with a mind-boggling exhibition of works on paper by two very excellent local emerging artists Drew Englander and Donald Fodness, alongside two national artists of amazing talent and visceral visual intensity Larry Bob Phillips and Paul Nudd.  Expect lots of surprises as we look to see if the Rapture is really upon us.  Things get down to serious business thereafter as we host solo exhibitions by three of our top artists Xi Zhang, William Betts and Jenny Morgan.  The fall will include the next solo exhibition from Karen McClanahan, an artists who has been with us from almost our very beginnings in 2001, and the rarest of rare a new solo exhibition by Susan Meyer.
2011 had so many great moments for Plus Gallery, from our first exhibition of the year by Melissa Furness that featured a full-wall video installation and some of the most intricate and genre expanding paintings of any year, to our most recent solo by Frank T. Martinez, his fourth and absolutely finest body of work yet.  In between we hosted our first photography show in our current space featuring Patti Hallock's timeless, playful, stunningly composed "The West Is Here" in conjunction with Denver's Month of Photography celebration, followed by our only group exhibition of the year, the highly praised "Peaking the Edge" which featured not only some of the best talent from around the US but two terrific artists from New Zealand Shannon Novak and Sara Hughes.  The exhibition ended up being wonderfully redefined following our Broadway Corridor Public Art Celebration as a team of young artists led by Liz Greene presented one of most memorable performances in recent memory.  But even that couldn't prepare us and the city for what followed:  Allie Pohl's debut solo exhibition at Plus "Mirror, Mirror."  Allie created one of the most breathtaking and magical installations in the history of the gallery, progressing her "Ideal Woman" theme further with a floor-to-ceiling caryatid form in chromed resin, surrounded by mirrors that reflected the ideals of the online dating scene.  Oh, and there was her neon and video loop too that accompanied the show.  We could have just ended our careers there, going out on a high note, but nevertheless we continued forward and hosted our ten year anniversary in conjunction with a new set of paintings from Gabriel Liston. Liston presented his best work to date with an intimate collection of full-color and striking black-and-white scenes depicting youth at its finest and most real.  The show and our anniversary also found us with one of the best gifts we could ever receive, a site-specific exterior graphic application for our canopy developed from across the world by Shannon Novak, an artist whom we've grown to admire quite a bit since striking up a relationship in 2010.  After some well-needed time off at the end of the summer, we returned in our finest form yet with Robin Schaefer's latest highly nuanced and thoughtful body of work "Unlearning the Differences."  We'll never forget the pairing of sister and brother that month in the space as Kagen Schaefer unveiled a work of the most extreme detail, beauty and inspiration to a select and appreciative crowd, his one of a kind desk commissioned by legendary contemporary film director Darren Aronofsky.  And of course that was followed by the return of Bill Amundson in October with "Blurred Vision," an exhibition that broke many records for the gallery including the first time ever having to turn people away at the door for his unprecedented artist talk.   And of course none of this would have been possible without our terrific team of interns, who supported the gallery program and helped us get through all of the exciting (and not-so exciting) times.

Happy Holidays to all!

XI ZHANG UNVEILS AN IMPRESSIVE NEW PAINTING AT CU BOULDER ART MUSEUM FRIDAY, APRIL 1st

review "Fearing the Worst - Angst in new Japanese Art" with  "Ikeda is a visionary.  His large drawings in acrylic paint, applied with pens, describe masses of organic life, castle architecture, and a city, all infinitesimal in detail......... It would take you hours to explore thoroughly, and then you'd have to start over, to refresh your memory.  Does this sound like a stunt?  It's an enchantment."

We would say much the same for Xi Zhang's recently completed painting "No one's wonderland," a massive, extraordinarily dense work that conjures up many references from history as well as our most contemporary times, covering wide ground.  It's an unusual swath of life unlike anything ever seen in Colorado and maybe elsewhere, a pure merger between Chinese culture and the experiences of an artist absorbed into american life during his formative years as a painter.  Xi has always tilted the experimental curve within Denver's contemporary scene from the start a few years back.  His latest is an exciting, surreal view into the artist's brain, as close as one might get to that condition in a single work of art.

Zhang's new painting will be unveiled this Friday, April 1st from 5-7pm at the CU Boulder Art Museum for the exhibition "Beyond-2011 Spring MFA Thesis Exhibition."  Join us for the reception and to view Xi's achievement from 5-7pm that day.

OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3RD AT PLUS GALLERY - XI ZHANG: AWAKING DREAMS + NICK MUSAELIAN: HEROIC PAINTING

Plus Gallery concludes 2010 with the pairing of Boulder artists Xi Zhang and Nick Musaelian, two of the most exciting painters to emerge in the region in the last five years.  Zhang's "Awaking Dreams" and Musaelian's "Heroic Painting" create a visual experience like no other, each with recognizable elements that exude an intense reach for something extremely deep, thoughtful and playful all at the same time. This is the second major gallery exhibition for Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design graduate Zhang, who was noted as "Emerging artist of the year 2008" by art critic Kyle MacMillan in the Denver Post and who is currently finishing his MFA at CU Boulder.  The exhibition is Musaelian's debut in the Denver market, following his recent MFA from the New York Academy of Art and hot on the heels of recent exhibitions in NYC, Toronto, and Dublin.

Zhang and Musaelian split the main exhibition space on the first floor of the gallery, while upstairs will contain a display of Zhang's "b-sides" including his multi-panel erotic works that are all the rave.

We invite you to join us for the opening reception this Friday, December 3rd from 6-9pm.
